The main objective is to provide a safe environment in an area that contains vehicles and pedestrians.

Where possible they should be lit from the boundaries of the parking area to minimise the risk of columns and lighting being damaged by vehicles. If columns have to be mounted within the parking area they should be protected by crash barriers or similar.

Lighting should be mounted as high as possible (12m or more above ground level) to minimise shadowing.
