Outdoor cargo handling, storage areas
The main objective is to provide a safe work environment in an area which may contain machinery, motorised vehicles and pedestrians and in which the size and position of obstructions may vary over time.

Higher light levels are required in areas where goods are loaded/unloaded and for potential conflict areas where cargo is sorted into handling bays or railway sidings.

Ensure lighting equipment does not obstruct movement of cargo handling equipment, and is not too close to electrified lines.

Take care to avoid lighting obscuring or decreasing the visibility of signalling equipment. This can include direct light and reflected light from other surfaces.

For large container storage areas general area lighting may be need to be supplemented, for instance by additional floodlights mounted on crane structures. Additional local lighting can also be used mounted on fixed hoppers and conveyors.

Ensure that the transition between areas with higher light levels to those with lower light levels is gradual to allow the eye to adapt to the changed light level.
